Yesterday I had a wonderful session with the sweetest little newborn. The only hard part was getting her to go to sleep as she was an extremely alert newborn who didn't want to miss a thing!

I really love how her images turned out. For the photographers that read my blog, I used available light plus bounced flash on the bed image. The other two images are window light.

18 Years

The past two weeks have been kind of icky. First the children were sick and then by the time they were better, I was sick. I finally stopped coughing on Saturday. Just in time to celebrate my 18th wedding anniversary which was Sunday.

18 years. I can't believe it! I don't talk too much about my personal life in this space, but I do want to say that I think my hubby is the best. I am quite certain that there is no other man on the planet that would suit me better.

We had the most wonderful day. It was the first time in a long time that neither of us went to work. I am very thankful to my husband's employees for not calling his cell phone once the entire day. My mom kept the kids and we finally got to go to the Chihuly Glass show at the conservatory. It was so nice to have quiet, grown up conversation and not be rushing around.

I did find the subject matter at the glass show quite challenging from a composition standpoint. The scale was immense, but the space was tight and it was hard to capture the scope of the setting. Still, I enjoyed stretching myself a bit and trying to make art out of something completely out of my realm of experience. There were tons of other photographers there and yes, I covertly eyeballed everyones lenses (it's a photographer thing!), something that never ceases to amuse my husband when he catches me doing it.

A Very Happy Six Month Old

This darling little girl was so pleasant at her 6 month session yesterday. Mom and I were having so much fun we didn't want to quit. I believe we wore our subject out as she was fast asleep before I had even packed up my gear.

As mentioned in December, I am now offering on location (meaning in your home) studio light sessions during these dark winter months. Studio light sessions are for children only, not families. If you need a family session, I suggest booking now for spring so we can have your session outdoors (where it will be the most fun).

Schedules and Plans

I wanted to update my schedule for the next few months. January is now full and no more sessions are available. I have openings in February and March. April is almost full. Many families who wanted fall outdoor sessions but came to me too late, have booked for April. I will be on vacation for a bit in February and going to a workshop in May. So contact me soon if you want to reserve a spring session.

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to book newborn sessions before the baby is born. Newborns are best photographed during the first week after delivery. This is when they are most complacent and flexible, allowing us to create those curled up newborn shots everyone loves.

Plans. . .I've got big plans for Bonnie Burman Photography in the coming year. I will post more on this later after I have a chance to organize my thoughts. In the mean times, I wish you all a blessed, happy, and safe Holiday.

Final Session of 2007

This will be my last share for the year. I'm glad to end things on a high note. This sweet little girl was pure joy. She was awake for almost the entire session but hardly cried a bit. Just a lovely little girl with a lovely set of parents. Enjoy.

I'll probably be back with a ramble or two about the upcoming year sometime in the next few weeks. I'm taking a break from sessions until January. If you are planning on a session, I suggest booking at least four to six weeks ahead of time. I won't be squeezing in as many last minute people as I did this past year. If you would like a newborn session, please contact me before the baby is born. Newborn sessions should take place within the first week after birth.

I haven't shared in a long time. Things are finally winding down here. I have one more session and then I am taking time off to spend with my family until after the holidays.

I wanted to share this adorable little girl I had the pleasure of recently photographing. Besides my adorable subject, the other noteworthy thing about this image is that I used studio lighting.

I love the casual style of available light photography. It truly is my passion. However, with the dark winter months approaching, I have decided to offer on location studio portraits on a limited basis. I will only offer these types of portraits for the winter months. If you are in need of a family session, I strongly recommend you wait until spring so we can work outdoors. But I am available to work all winter long, sun or no sun, with babies and small children.

This is a very busy month for me as it is for many photographers. I don't have as much time to post here, but I wanted to share one from a 3 month old session I had the other day. People often comment on the amazing eyes of this little girl who is in my website baby gallery. I had the pleasure of photographing her a second time. I am just sharing one new image, as I want the rest to be a surprise when her parents see them.

If you need a session in October while the leaves are still on the trees and colorful, I can still try to squeeze you in. My weekends are completely booked (both Saturdays and Sundays). However, some weekday spots are available. I typically don't work more than two days per week shooting, but I understand that October is a very desirable month, so I added some extra days this month.

I had a fun session tonight with a lovely young lady. She said she didn't want run of the mill portraits, and I tried to deliver, although I am sure she and her mom might have thought I was a bit odd when I was behind the dumpster trying to get the right angle on some of my shots. I really love working with seniors, and tonight I stepped out of my comfort zone with some new locations. I am so pleased with the results.

Last night was a fun evening. I got to have a session with the children of a friend from high school. The mom and I hadn't seen or spoken in more than 20 years! The kids gave me a run for my money. They were extremely friendly, bright,and outgoing. But they were a couple of movers. It's a good thing I always wear tennis shoes. Well, my pc is home and on my desk where it belongs. I am starting to feel like I am getting back into the groove, but I still have a way to go. Good News

I found out this afternoon that all the data from my hard drive will be recovered. I have should have my computer back by next Tuesday. The PC was under warrenty, but recoving all that data will cost me a pretty penny, especially since I have such a huge hard drive. So now, I am off to spend some more money on a backup drive.

Bad news. One of my wisdom teeth is giving me a lot of trouble. Wah, I am falling apart! Unless I have a miraculous recovery by Monday, I am going to have to go see the dentist. I know he's going to pull it. I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled when I was in my early 20s and it was no big deal. But after Googling information on wisdom tooth removal for "older" people, I am now freaking out just the tiniest bit (note to self: stop Googling medical conditions as this in itself can cause a medical condition).

I know the parents of my recent newborn are eager for images, so I will post one more in black and white. I just don't trust any color edits on the laptop. She is so adorable. This is one of my favorite images ever.

Catching Up

So shortly after my last post, I had a major computer crash. I am hoping that the files on the hard drive can be recovered. All of my client sessions were backed up, but I was lazy and didn't back up many of the other things that make life and business go smoothly. Personal images, business forms, my custom designed card and storyboard templates. All trapped right now inside my hard drive. Please come back. I miss you!

Ok, so obviously being without my pc is making me a bit nutty. I hate this laptop I am working from right now. The monitor is all wrong. Nothing looks right. I am afraid to edit any images because everything looks so wonky (by the way, my sister informed me that I use the word wonky over much, but I know it is the first time I have used it here).

In addition to massive computer malfunctions, I have also had the home air conditioning konk out (fixed), the car air conditioning also konked out (not fixed), andI got my hair cut REALLY short (temporary insanity).

This morning I had a session with the sweetest newborn. I am dying to edit these images. As I said, my laptop monitor is way off. But I love to share. Here is just one that I hope looks OK. If you are a new visitor,

It's my birthday and I bought myself. . .

I bought myself a new proofing site for my clients! Woo Hoo! I am beyond thrilled. The new site has everything. Unlike my old proofing site which could only allow the client to select individual prints for purchase, the new site handles prints, collections, session albums, incentive items, credit cards, absolutely everything. The preview slideshow and the proof gallery will all be in one place. Clients will no longer have to go one place for the slideshow and another place for the gallery. They won't have to call me on the phone to give me their credit card information. They won't have to fax me an order form in order to buy collections and look on a printed price sheet to figure out the cost. Everything will be so much more streamlined than before. I am constantly looking for was to make the ordering process as simple and painless as possible. I am so excited to finally find a system that will treat my clients to a first class ordering experience.

So before I get ahead of myself, I still have to install the system and set it up. It will take me a few weeks to get everything tweaked to my standards (I am a bit picky). But I hope to unveil the new system by the beginning of July. If you have ordered from me in the past, I hope this new system will knock your socks off by comparison. New clients, I welcome all feedback as you try the system out in the coming months.

Some fellow put a camera on his cat's collar and let the cat wander around for the day with the camera taking pictures every few seconds. At least it has something to do with photography.

Just a note

I wanted to share a few bit of information with my clients.

First of all, I will be on vacation, June 10-16. I will have limited access to email. I will also check my voice mail daily.

The month of June is entirely booked for child sessions. I will still squeeze in maternity sessions and newborn sessions if I can (newborns are infants under 2 weeks old). I am currently booking child sessions for July. August has already begun to fill up so dates for that month are limited.

Finally, let's talk about Christmas! Yes, Christmas. If you would like images for your Christmas cards, sessions must be completed by the end of October. I will not be able to guarantee delivery of cards in time for the holidays for any sessions booked in November. The absolute cut off date for a Christmas card session would be November 15 and I will not guarantee delivery of cards for any session after October 31.

Finally, I have an idea swirling around in my head. If several families would like to gather on one day for Christmas card mini-sessions, I would be willing to try this. I would charge a group rate session fee which would be split by all the participants. The sessions would be brief, around 15 minutes per family and I would show a limited number of proofs (probably 10) to each family. To make this work, I would need one person to coordinate the day by contacting their friends and finding interested families. This individual would then contact me to work out the details. That way, I won't have a dozen different people contacting me about this. We would meet at a central location. Prints and cards would be purchased at my regular prices. This little guy sure was a deep thinker, though. He wasn't real interested in me, but he did enjoy the grass, the trees, the sticks, the rocks, and did I mention frogs?? Big ones. I tried to get a photo, but they are fast and really good at camouflage. I was too tired to chase them anyway as my little client was very active!

This little one is very special to me as I have photographed her more than any other child. I did her 3 month, 6 month, and one year portraits, as well as an extended family session. Last night was the first time I have worked with her since she learned to walk. I also got a hug, which made my whole evening.

Trying something new

Trying some new techniques. It's not for everyone. In general, I like simple, clean, natural looking photos. But I wanted to make my clients aware that I am able to add texture and other effects to their images if they are interested.

Location, Location, Location!

I am looking for outdoor locations on private property in Butler County and Allegheny County that I may use for photo sessions. The type of locations I am seeking would include:

Farms
Orchards
Fields
Rustic type buildings (remember, I only need the exterior)

Basically, any kind of natural looking landscape with areas of interest such as fences, trees, paths, or walls.

In exchange for being allowed to use the property occasionally (maybe once or twice a month during the warmer months), I am offering a complimentary photo session and a print credit to anyone who can help me secure the location. It can be your own property, or the property of a friend or relative. Doesn't matter. If you help get me permission to use it, I will provide you with the complimentary session.

I also want to mention that I am an extremely polite and conscientious person. I would always call ahead before scheduling a session at a private location and I would also make certain the property was not damaged in any way.

After yesterday, I finally feel like spring has arrived. I got to have an outdoor session for the first time in months. This little girl was like the sunshine. She was bright and happy (except during the clothing changes--hey sometimes getting dressed makes me cranky too.)We had a wonderful session and I got to use my new basket which I have been saving for someone just this age.

Missing Summer

I need to post a little reminder of summer. I have been so cold for the past few weeks. My work area is on the coldest part of the house, I think. We live in an older home which was build in 1937. The walls are brick with plaster right over them. No insulation in between. The one good thing is our heater vents are these huge square metal things right in the floor. The kids love to sit on them. You get warmed up fast! Anyway, here's a storyboard that reminds me of summer.

I don't usually photograph large groups. But I have one client that is very special. She has referred me to many, many people and really helped my business get off the ground. So when she asked if I would photograph her extended family along with her father's vintage pick up truck, how could I refuse? Yes, that's right. I was asked to photograph a truck. Me. The baby photographer. I'm still proofing the truck photos and hope to have some of them to share very soon. In the meanwhile, here's another photo from the same session. That's my "tutu baby" getting a smooch. This photo just makes me smile.

On another note, many of you have commented on the little girl on the front of my business card. A few days ago she was taken to Children's Hospital. As my clients know, I never share personal information about the children I photograph so I can't give too many details. She is doing better, but her diagnosis is unclear. I'm sure her family would appreciate prayers for her recovery right now.

A Few from a Recent Session

Well, I haven't posted in ages. I've been very busy and very productive. Over the weekend I had a session with an adorable brother and sister. It's always such a privilege for me to go to people's homes and be allowed to interact with them and get to know their kids. These two little ones were pretty shy at first, but by the end of the session the older one wanted me to pick him up. Ahh, the thrill of acceptance. Because kids are real. They don't fake it. They don't pretend to like people they don't. So when a child decides you're OK, it really means something.

I also wanted to share a new product I will be offering my clients. For all future sessions, I will be putting together one or two storyboards that they may purchase. A storyboard will be either 12 x 12 or 10 x20. They come mounted on double weighted mat board and sprayed for protection. They can be framed or displayed unframed. Below is one of the storyboards from my weekend session. I can also do custom storyboards for clients who have something special in mind. I will put more details regarding storyboards on my website in the next few days.

My Kind of Girl

The mom of this lovely young lady called me and asked for me to do her daughter's first communion portrait. I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I love working with kids of all ages, but I seem to be having a pretty good run of preschoolers and babies of late. Older children, especially ones that don't run away from me are something unusual for me. My photography style also tends to be on the casual side. How does one do a casual First Communion portrait? To me, the occasion just doesn't feel casual.

One more thing that had me pondering about this session: did you know that white is a really tough color to photograph? It's very easy to over expose white and lose all the detail. I had some experience with this, having photographed a bride earlier this year. I know all the tips and tricks by heart. But still, I worried before hand. Let's face it, I worry about every session. For me there is no such thing as just another photo session. I want every single one to be wonderful. More than wonderful. I can't just phone it in. Not ever. I have to give my all.

I was fortunate in that the family had some wonderful window light for me to work with. I met my little subject and she was absolutely beautiful in the dress her grandmother made for her and her hair done up like a princess. She and her brother were both great kids. They shook my hand, let me instruct them, and the brother even held my reflector. You know what I loved most about this lovely little girl who looked so proper in her white dress? I loved that when I looked her in the eye I saw a sparkle of mischief. There was a kindred spirit hiding in there. . .my kind of girl.

I spent the afternoon reorganizing my website galleries. I added a drop down menu which I hope will make the site more streamlined. If anyone would like to try to break my site and then report any problems either here or via email, I would be grateful.

This little boy was so darling. On the way home, I was thinking about how much I love doing what I do. For me the greatest part is seeing how much the parents love their children. I wish every child in the world could be treasured as much as this little guy.

Oh yeah, the photos turned out pretty amazing too.

I had the opportunity to do Senior Portraits for a very nice young man who laughed at the appropriate moment at all my corny jokes and didn't seem to mind me bossing him around even though he was a football player and bigger than me. Click on the image to see it a bit larger.

I suspect he will prefer this next one in color, but I just had to make it black and white for myself. Maybe mom and dad will like the black and white version best as well.

I've decided to set up a page with some free stock photography. You can find my stock photography here. There isn't much to choose from at this time, but I will be updating now and again. What are stock photos? Stock photos are photos which you might use as a background for a web page, or a slide presentation, or even scrapbooking. Maybe you write a newsletter and need a photo to illustrate an article. Most stock photos are available for a fee. Mine are free for non-commercial uses only. For instance, a church or an individual might use them. But not a business. I hope someone finds my photos useful. Make sure to read the terms. My name needs to stay on the photo and of course, none of my other photos from any of my other sites are to be used without my permission. If used on the web, a link back to my photography site would be appreciated.

On another note, I met my husband for the first time eighteen years ago today!
